All About Me

Hello! My name is Dr. Tonya Robinson-McNair, and I am currently a Second Grade ELA Teacher in Jacksonville, FL. I have been teaching for 27 years. I have taught in both public and private sectors, including early childhood, elementary, and secondary education. My husband of 25 years is a music teacher and a Doctor of Music Education from Liberty University. As we do not have any children, we do have two beautiful dogs, nieces, nephews, and a host of godchildren (many of whom have been former students). Teaching is a second career and a passion for me. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice with Cum Laude Honors from Bethune-Cookman University and my Master of Arts Degree in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Reading from Nova Southeastern University.

I have written two children's books: one published work, entitled The Lemonade Shoe, and a copyrighted work entitled Daddy's Girl. Each book is a tribute to my mother and father. I am the first in my generation to receive multiple degrees from Institutions of Higher Education and was driven to pursue my doctoral degree in Reading Education from Nova Southeastern University. My motivation is two-fold. I am eager to find a way to better support my students and novice teachers in reading instruction and enhancing professional development opportunities. Secondly, I challenge myself to be a positive inspiration to the younger generation in my family and community.

My most recent honor has been the completion of my doctorate in Reading Education and a nomination for Duval County Public Schools 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year Semi-finalist. It has been a complete honor to serve such amazing children and families in Duval County, FL, for at least 17 years as a District Model Teacher and Teacher Leader. It has also been a joy serving my colleagues as a Team Lead teacher various times throughout my career.

I love to spend time with my family and friends as well as play basketball, watch movies, ride bikes, and now, hit my punching bag. Riding my bike and hitting the punching bag is a new venture that was established during the COVID season. Perhaps, the most joyful time is spent with my three-year-old nephew, Izzy! He is truly a wonderful addition to our family and keeps us on our toes.

Going above and beyond for our students is a way of life for educators with passion. This particular Halloween, we decided to surprise our students by greeting them as pandas. Our principal decided to join in on the fun.

Returning to school during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging, but we found ways to create beautiful moments.

One of the most rewarding times in my career occurred when my former third grade reading student, Ja'Tavia, invited me to her graduation and accepted a full academic scholarship to Bethune-Cookman University, my Alma Mater.

Priceless Moments
