RoomRecess, Kahoot!, Quizizz, and 99math are just a few. There are hundreds more digital resources you could choose! But, did you know there are ISTE Standards for Students, Educators, Educational Leaders, and Coaches to guide you. Instructional technology expands beyond digital resources but involves a host of functions for educational practice, professional growth and application. Preview the ISTE Standards at https://iste.org/standards.
What is your experience with the ISTE standards up until now? I have shared my experience below:
ISTE Standards are a new source of knowledge for me. As a novice of Student and Educator Standards, it was surprising to learn my instructional practices heavily focus on the Collaborator, Designer, and Analyst Standards for Educators as our team frequently discusses digital learning programs to enhance instruction and analyze data to differentiate instruction (International Society for Technology in Education [ISTE], 2017). Yet, the Knowledge Constructor standards are the focal point of instruction for my students as they frequently research information to build knowledge (ISTE, 2017). Where do you find yourself in the ISTE Standards? Submit your comments below.

I believe the ISTE standards apply to all learning environments/domains: K-12, higher ed., and in training programs for business/industry, government, and military. It allows educators to realize their strengths and what other characteristics are important to acquire to enhance the learning and teaching experiences of all.
ISTE standards apply to all academia, regardless of subject. The advancement of technology continues to rise in school districts throughout the country. As a 21-year music educator, The applications I use promote student engagement. CANVA, Finale (Make Music ), Quaver Music, MusicPlay Online, and Microsoft 365 are among the programs that I implement in the music classroom. It's always a delight to see my students light up with excitement and enthusiasm when they get their hands on the latest technology. Their motivation to explore and learn never fails to impress me, and I feel proud to be part of their journey.
Thank you, Dr. McNair. I agree that the ISTE Standards apply to all academia. I love how you shared your use of technology in your music classes. I would love to hear more about how you promote digital agency among your students. Have they had an opportunity to use any of the programs you listed?
Very thankful for you and your knowledge. I've found that in todays classrooms students need the technology aspect. I try to incorporate Fun Fridays with technology. I just learned, through you, about 99math and my students LOVED it. I love that it gives immediate feedback. Even greater that we can tie a standard in :)
Thank you, Paige! I love that we can set a purpose and create meaningful learning with some of the digital platforms. 99math is definitely a favorite among younger students.
ISTE standards are new information for me as well! Digital technologies continue to become more and more intertwined with our daily lives. Smart phones, laptops, tablets, etc. are more accessible than ever! I see the youth being exposed to these devices (and all their contents) before they even start Kindergarten.
I really like the idea of these standards because it helps educators be more intentional with their implementation of technology, and it also teaches students to use technology in a responsible and productive manner! The same devices that can be used for endless scrolling and streaming can also be used as an interactive (and FUN) tool for learning! We are using tech in the class already, but how can I give my students opportunities to learn online etiquette and how to use technology productively and intentionally? I remember a moment where I had to stop my Kindergarten class to talk to students about how everything they see online is not good or appropriate, and that it's necessary to be a critical/conscious consumer (said in kindergarten terms). I'll be taking a closer look at these standards to see how I can better prepare my students for the technology-driven world we live in. Interesting read, very thought-provoking. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Liza! You are certainly applying some of the ISTE Standards by teaching your students to be responsible and conscious consumers of technology. According to ISTE Standards for Educators, you are exemplifying Citizenship. There may be some other areas you are applying as well. This is great, especially for your Kindergarten students. Kudos!!!
